A visitor can get to know the mainland and the Monasteries of the island of Hydra with donkeys or by walking. There is no other transportation to the Island. Apart from its enduring natural attractions, the beaches, the blue sea, the romantic walks, the tranquillity and cosmopolitan nightlife, Hydra offers the visitor a wide variety of unforgettable activities. Naturally, it’s worth taking a short walk to the port of Hydra to visit, browse or simply “gaze” at the quaint little shops along the beach. Stroll along the cobblestone streets, between the picturesque taverns and small shops with colorful folk art, and admire the Hydra houses with their unique architecture.
Visit the Historical Archive-Museum of Hydra, the Ecclesiastical-Byzantine Museum and the historic mansions of the Fighters of the Greek Revolution of 1821, which have also been turned into museums. Various exhibitions, events, speeches, cultural nights and concerts are held on the island in the Melina Merkouri Art and Concert Hall, at various galleries and art places all over the island.
Hydra is famous for its diverse natural environment, which is a paradise of the walker and nature lover. There are eleven tracks which you can follow on foot or by donkey. The view of the island from the hills above is fascinating. Following the route of these paths amongst wild flowers, the rare “spentzes”, cyclamen, poppies and thyme, you can visit the old monasteries where, in addition to the architecture, you can admire the unique artifacts and exhibits. By boat or by water taxi from the port of Hydra, you can circumnavigate the island of Hydra, admiring the entire coastline and discovering unique bays, where you can swim in peace away from ‘the madding crowd’.
On some beaches you can enjoy many water sports, including canoeing and kayaking or go fishing from the rocks and snorkeling in the rich fishing grounds. For those who love watching movies, there is the cinema “Gardenia”, which shows most of the successful winter movies. The Hydra Diving Center is a must for anyone to experience the rich and colorful images of the beautiful underwater world around the island, a unique, unforgettable diving experience.
The island’s capital is the town of Spetses, with the port of Dapia; the district also includes the islets of Spetsopoula, Agios Ioannis, and Mikro Bourboulo. The town of Spetses is distinguished by a noble architecture, thoughtful town planning and a marvellous promenade near the old port. The island has become a favourite destination in recent years for personalities from Greece and abroad. No vehicles are allowed, enhancing further the unique atmosphere.
In the main town, visit the Museum of Spetses, the Museum of Bouboulina and the Anargyros Manor. These are buildings of great architectural historical significance, dating from the peak of the island’s history and revolutionary times. Walk to the lighthouse; the view won’t disappoint. Rent a sea-taxi and visit Spetsopoula, the private island of the Niarchos family. Those more romantically inclined might choose to see the old port by carriage. The Poseidonion Grand Hotel, a superb sample of French-style architecture reminiscent of the Côte d’Azure, is one of the top places to stay; at least drop by for a coffee, dinner or spa session.
Spetses has recently emerged as a gastronomic destination. In the village of Dapia, enjoy some fresh fish and local wine at one of the taverns in the harbour, town centre or old port. Never leave the island without tasting Spetses’ traditional almond sweets.
All the beaches of Spetses are beautiful, especially those of the south-western part of the island, combining the ocean’s blue with the woodland’s green. Visit the ‘college’ beach of Kaiki, so called for its proximity to a school. Or perhaps you’ll have the opportunity to celebrate life at the uniquely beautiful beach of Vrellos. Many consider Zogeria, at the cove of the same name, to be the island’s best beach. Lush foliage, a peaceful environment and clean waters: the perfect getaway. Other popular beaches include Agia Marina, Agia Paraskevi and Agioi Anargyroi, with Xylokeriza and Ligoneri also attracting both locals and tourists. Near to the town of Spetses, you’ll find more beaches, including Kounoupitsa and Agios Mamas.
